Dinoflagellata (Gonyaulax): The Spinning Algae
-Algae (plant-like)
-Cell walls made of thick cellulose plates
-Contain chlorophyll, carotenoids, and red pigments
-Move with 2 flagella (located in grooves at right angles to each other. The cell spins while the flagella beat)
-Some live in freshwater, but most are marine (major component of phytoplankton, like diatoms)
-Live symbiotically with jellyfish, mollusks, and corals
-Some are bioluminescent
-Some produce toxins (have killed fish before), red tide
